SBS 343 - History of Capitalist Commodities and Drugs This course examines the transnational history of particular commodities such as sugar, tobacco, silver, tea, cotton, and opium. Students investigate the economic, political, and socio-cultural aspects of these commodities from 1400 to 1800 through a global lens and with attention to the historical process of capitalism and the industrial revolution. As part of a project-based learning approach, students learn to examine primary and secondary sources, write book and literature reviews, and present historical research.
