HCOM 307S - Soc Impct Of Mass Media SL Explores the relationship between mass media and contemporary social problems. Issues such as media violence, mass media ownership and control, media portrayals of nation, race, class, gender and sexual orientation will be explored from the consumer’s perspective. Outcomes include raising awareness of the impact of media messages, deconstructing media representations of race/class/gender identities, developing effective media literacy tools, and critically analyzing the cultural products we consume and create. Involves students in media literacy programs in local schools and community organizations.
