MPA 336 - Jazz History

An overview of jazz development from its roots in African music and American spirituals to the funeral bands of New Orleans with an examination of the work and stylistic contributions of the great jazz originators like King Oliver, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Emphasis on the social, cultural, and economic circumstances that influenced jazz.
