Mission

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences empowers students to critically examine their place in the world: to imagine, to communicate, to collaborate, to create, and to transform. Our graduates are engaged global citizens ready for the realities of the 21st century. They apply values, interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to provide creative and socially responsible solutions for the future.

Dean & Staff

James Hussar, Ph.D., Dean

Dr. James Hussar, joined Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) as associate dean in July 2023, having served for 14 years at California State University, Fullerton in a variety of faculty and administrative roles, including as interim AVP for Undergraduate Studies and General Education, Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and as interim Department Chair of the Department of Art.


Hussar has shown himself to be dedicated to student and faculty success, and adept at building partnerships in the community. Under his leadership, the college launched a paid internship program with the City of Seaside that provides students with insight into city administration and career pathways, partnered with the Monterey Museum of Art on a joint exhibit of National Geographic photographer Frans Lantings’ “Bay of Life” collection, approved the college’s first set of bylaws, and approved and implemented the college’s first strategic plan. 

Hussar serves as the CSUMB liaison for the World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay, a nonprofit that promotes the study of international affairs. He has published and presented on topics related to Latin American literature, including book reviews and a translation of an article for Democratic Governance in Latin America.

He holds a bachelor’s in Spanish from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s in Spanish from Millersville University, and a doctorate in literature from the University of Notre Dame.
