Dean & Staff
Harald Barkhoff, Ph.D., Dean
Dr. Harald Barkhoff joined California State University, Monterey Bay in July 2021, as the new Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services.
Dean Barkhoff brings to CSUMB a long history as an experienced and accomplished educator, mentor, scholar, researcher, administrator, and an advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. He comes to CSUMB from the University of Hawai’i Hilo, College of Natural and Health Sciences, where he was a tenured professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences . While at UH Hilo, he served as Department Chair since 2013 and specialized in the study of sports psychology. Many of his studies focused on elite athletes and peak performance, but he is also interested in cultural components of health behaviors, including physical activity in indigenous, Native Hawaiian environments.
He was attracted to CSUMB as it matches his deep appreciation of holistic, all-inclusive, and place-based educational approaches. He lives and embraces an aloha spirit which is the coordination of mind and heart within each person, and he extends this to helping and supporting others, including in the classroom.
His key accomplishments include guiding the development and implementation of a certificate program in indigenous health at UH Hilo, leading the growth of the KES Department through expansion, the successful recruitment of diverse faculty, and meeting the needs of indigenous students through a culturally sensitive indigenous-focused curriculum. Under his leadership, the KES Department received the American Kinesiology Association’s highly competitive Inclusive Excellence Award for 2019-2020.
Dean Barkhoff earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sport Science/Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from the University of Stuttgart and Tuebingen, a Master of Arts in Teacher Education in Sport Science/ Physical Education, German Linguistics and Literature from the University of Stuttgart, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Science/ Physical Education, German Linguistics and Literature from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg.
