Michelle L. Mayo, Ph.D., Dean

Michelle Mayo will join the CSUMB Office of the Provost as the Associate Provost for Student Success and Dean of Undergraduate Studies on July 3, 2023. She has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and joins CSUMB from North Carolina Central University, where she served as associate provost for Academic Programs and Undergraduate Research.

At NCCU, Mayo has documented success in fostering campus environments that promoted the professional development of faculty and staff and supported students’ personal and academic success. During her tenure at NCCU, Mayo has led the approval and implementation of nine innovative degree programs, oversight of a $3M budget to support high-impact and experiential opportunities for students and implementation of a new academic program review process to maintain rigor and innovation of all academic degree programs.

Mayo earned her bachelor’s in political science and master’s in education from Truman State University. She completed her doctorate in educational policy and leadership studies with an emphasis in higher education administration from Indiana University-Bloomington. Since earning her degree, Mayo has remained committed to making higher education accessible to underserved populations. Her research agenda examines the impact particular policies have on the educational experiences of students, particularly students of color in the college setting.
