Chemistry, Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Degree

Chemistry is the science that explores the fundamental properties, reactivity, and analysis of atoms and molecules. An understanding of chemistry brings an appreciation and understanding of the world, and provides real-life technical skills.

Required Courses

Please note: Twelve of the units taken to complete a minor (6 of which are upper division) may not be used in fulfillment of other minors, concentrations, or major requirements.

This minor requires that students be eligible to enroll in CHEM 110 - Chemistry I  (4 units), either by a satisfactory score on a chemistry placement test (available from the Department of Biology and Chemistry) or by completion of MATH 130 - Precalculus  (5 units) or a higher math course.  Prior preparation from STAT 250 or CHEM 211 is necessary prior to enrollment in the upper division courses.  STAT 250 also has MATH 150 as a prerequisite.  CHEM 211 has CHEM 111 as a prerequisite.

Learning Outcomes

LO 1: Chemical Foundations

Students develop problem-solving skills related to the nature of matter at atomic and molecular scales, and can understand and describe bonding, transformations, reactions, an other chemical properties, and they apply basic scientific principles and methods to these chemical processes.

LO2: Advanced Knowledge in Chemistry

Students apply scientific principles and methods in one or more areas of Chemistry selected from among courses in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental, agricultural, forensic, or organic chemistry.
