Writing & Rhetoric, Minor

The Writing and Rhetoric Minor provides you with the opportunity to further develop your abilities as a writer, speaker, and critical thinker through participation in a writing-intensive curriculum focusing on the study of multicultural rhetorical traditions, composition pedagogy, argumentation, public advocacy, and the relationships between technology and communication. This minor provides you with both the practice and the intellectual understanding needed to communicate effectively for a variety of rhetorical occasions in your personal, civic, and professional lives.

Required Courses


Please note: Twelve of the units taken to complete a minor (6 of which are upper division) may not be used in fulfillment of other minors, concentrations, or major requirements.

Learning Outcomes


Learning Outcome 1

Communicate ethically and effectively in both written and oral contexts for a variety of purposes and to diverse audiences.

Learning Outcome 2

Interpret and critically analyze a variety of texts, including written, oral, visual, and multimedia presentations.

Learning Outcome 3

Demonstrate a critical understanding of how effective and ethical communication practice is defined by a range of socio-cultural factors, including, but not limited to, race and ethnicity, gender, economic class, and sexual orientation.

Learning Outcome 4

Comprehend and critically analyze one or more cultures’ rhetorical tradition(s).

Learning Outcome 5

Understand and critically analyze various definitions of literacy and traditions of literacy education.
