Instructional Science & Technology, M.S.

An interdisciplinary program that integrates information technology, instructional design, and learning sciences, MIST responds to the increasing demand for professionals who understand learning theory, instructional design and technology, interactive media design and development, assessment and research. Whether a corporate trainer, classroom educator or a person developing coursework for those professionals, the MIST program creates rich learning experiences to empower professionals to make a difference for those they serve.

The MIST program has two tracks: MIST Blended and MIST Fully Online. MIST Blended is a state supported degree program that requires students to be on-campus for a weekend at the beginning of each term, and the rest of the instruction will happen online. MIST Fully Online is a self-supported online program through Extended Education that does not require on-campus meeting.

Required Courses

Students who need additional preparation in technology and/or writing skills are strongly encouraged to complete IST 501 - Technology Workshop  (1-4 units) and/or IST 511 - Writing Workshop  (1-4 units). Please consult the Program Coordinator for more information.

Learning Outcomes

Professional Communication

Students demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, integrity, and reliability through written and oral communication.  Students analyze multipe perspectives and effectively present ideas in a logical framework using a variety of communication modes.

Instructional Design

Students use the instructional design process to plan and develop learning solutions that solve real-world problems.  Student conduct front-end analysis; specify measurable learning objectives; and plan, develop, and implement learning solutions in keeping with evidence-based design principles and strategies.

Instructional Systems Foundations

Students analyze and explain core theories, principles, and models in the design and implementation of learning solutions.  Students include history, current issues, future trends, performance improvement, professional ethics, professional organizations, and fundamental theories, principle, and models in their analyses and explanations of instructional systems.

Technology and Mulimedia

Students create interactive and engaging multimedia learning products using industry standard technologies and tools.  Students evaluate and identify a variety of current and emerging technologies to develop effective and efficient learning solutions.  Students apply storyboarding and prototyping techniques and apply appropriate media design principles in the creation of learning products.

Assessment & Evaluation

Students design and conduct formative evaluations for improving learning solutions, including user and developmental testing.  Students describe and recommend summative evaluation methods for assessing program effectiveness and to create participant reaction instruments and criterio-based tests.
