Instructional Science & Technology, Certificate

The Instructional Science and Technology Certificate prepares students to design, develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs enhanced by interactive technologies.

The certificate is ideal for professionals working in education, private industry, or governmental institutions, who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in designing effective and efficient instructional programs.

Learning Outcomes


Instructional Technology Outcomes

Students are able to:

  • Utilize basic terminologies with comprehension;
  • Identify various instructional design models;
  • Identify major tools, trends, and issues in the field within their historical context;
  • Articulate differences between instructional technology, performance technology, and other related concepts;
  • Describe the essence of major learning theories and their impact on instructional technology;
  • Conduct career planning and lifelong professional development plans; and,
  • List and evaluate several possible capstone ideas.

Instructional Design Outcomes

Students are able to:

  • Identify, define, analyze, and articulate instructional problems and needs;
  • Generate and organize audience appropriate instructional content;
  • Develop an effective implementation strategy;
  • Create a learning assessment;
  • Create and justify a project evaluation plan;
  • Apply relevant learning theories to an instructional problem
  • Identify and explore diverse instructional products;
  • Complete a collaborative instructional design project with design document;
  • Create an individual instructional design document;
  • Evaluate and critique diverse instructional products and cases;
  • Design, develop, and implement a client-based real-world project;
  • Demonstrate professional collaboration and communication skills with clients and SMEs; and,
  • Apply project management skills.

Interactive Multimedia Outcomes

Students are able to:

  • Apply appropriate theories and derived multimedia principles;
  • Apply interactive design principles;
  • Construct a functioning learning module using interactive multimedia software, information technology, and media based upon appropriate learning theories;
  • Develop an interactive multimedia experience with appropriate feedback;
  • Select and use appropriate media tools to develop a solution designed for an identified instructional problem;
  • Use integrated software help systems, web communities, peer, and instructor support to overcome media tools software learning curves in an adaptable, flexible, proactive manner; and,
  • Conduct formative evaluation and obtain documented user feedback.

Breadth of Knowledge

Outcome Students are able to:

  • Broaden knowledge and skills that open wider career opportunities.

Pathways


The IST Certificate program is offered in two ways:

Fully Online Certificate Program (8 week terms)


The fully online program through Extended Education does not require on-campus meeting.

In the fully online IST Certificate program, courses are offered in the following schedule:

Hybrid Certificate Program (16 week terms)


The hybrid offering requires students to be on-campus for some face-to-face instructional time during each term, while the rest of the instruction happens online.
