MPA 321 - Monterey Jazz Festival Explores the Monterey Jazz Festival as an institution that musically reflects and shapes cultural values in the United States. Topics include the intersection of jazz with a wide variety of cultural values and social issues involving gender, race, class, politics, religion, sexuality, and more embedded within particular historical and cultural contexts. Students study jazz in live and mediated performance contexts and engage in ethnomusicological fieldwork at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
