Dan Shapiro, Ph.D., Interim Dean

Dan Shapiro has worked at CSUMB since 1997, beginning as a lecturer and advancing to the rank of professor before serving as the director of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment in 2014. He has published papers and given conference presentations on senior capstone courses, writing intensive critical thinking courses, ethics, service learning, and using institution-level assessment to engage faculty and promote student learning. He supported CSUMB’s initial accreditation effort and all subsequent reaffirmations of accreditation, is a graduate of the WSCUC Assessment Leadership Academy (ALA), and coordinates the ALA professional mentoring program. He served as Interim Associate Vice President for Academic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness from 2019-2020 and in fall 2020 started serving as Interim Associate Vice President for Academic Planning and Dean of University College & Graduate Studies. He has a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University.
